NYC’s ‘Scenario in the Shade’ exhibition features Bobby Gillespie, Hot Chip in big-name soundtrack

Devendra Banhart, Kurt Vile and MGMT will also contribute to the Red Bull Studios exhibit

A Red Bull Studios exhibit in New York entitled ‘Scenario in the Shade’ – musically curated by Black Bananas frontwoman Jennifer Herrema – is set to feature a host of big-name acts contributing to its aural soundscapes.

The exhibition will display the art of Justin Lowe and Jonah Freeman, but will also feature a soundtrack curated by Herrema, who reached out to a host of top artists and came back with more than six hours worth of recordings to play alongside the art.

The New York Times is currently featuring a short taster of the music involved, and have also unveiled the impressive list of stars who will be contributing. They include Bobby Gillespie (Primal Scream), Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip), Benjamin Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden (MGMT), Kurt Vile, Devendra Banhart and Lizzi Bougatsos of Gang Gang Dance

Herrema explained the thinking behind the production to The New York Times in advance of the exhibit’s opening:

“What I asked for was more like stream-of-conscious, don’t edit yourself — like, pick a key,” she said. “The soundtrack is completely integal. Basically it will guide through these scenarios that there will be multiple intentions. Because we can make a mix for every day of the week, and you would feel differently about the space.”

The Red Bull Studios website describes the exhibit as follows:

“Scenario in the Shade explores the history of youth subcultures of the San San International through a mise-en-scène of objects, architectural environments, and a 30 minute faux-ethnographic science fiction film, presented in the artist’s signature labyrinth of immersive interiors.”

The exhibition opened today (September 12), and will run at Red Bull Studios, 220W 18th Street until December 6.
