Early hours Prince set in Paisley Park watched by Madonna and less than 100 others

The surprise set went down after Madonna's Minnesota show last night

Less than a hundred Prince fans were treated to the gig of a lifetime last night in Paisley Park, Minnesota, as the singer played an unannounced show in his hometown complex, in front of an audience that included Madonna.

The Current’s Andrea Swensson has the full lowdown on the early hours gig, reporting an audience of 33 before Madonna and her entourage arrived on the scene, with the gig getting underway after 2am local time. Following Madonna and co’s arrival, she reports a crowd of “roughly sixty”. The crowd were selected to be told that “something special” would go down in advance of the performance.

Madonna is said to have taken in the performance sat at Prince’s feet, “looking up at him adoringly as he sang,” though she didn’t perform at the show herself, and didn’t stay for its entirety.

Madonna had played to the city’s Xcel Centre earlier in the evening, with her set featuring a dedication to Prince.

Prince’s set (tracks below) included several songs from his new album ‘HITNRUN Phase 1’, which was launched last month via Tidal. Some footage from earlier in his career also recently revealed Prince performing smash hit ‘Purple Rain’ for the first time, back in 1983.

Having previously said now is a “bad time for music in general,” Prince went out of his way to praise Kendrick Lamar last month, saying of his album ‘To Pimp A Butterfly’ “he just has something to say.”

Prince’s set list, as reported by Swensson, was as follows:

Use Me (Bill Withers)
Ain’t About to Stop
Pick Out My Clothes
1000 X’s and O’x
X’s Face

Free Yourself

Sign O the Times
Work to Do (Isley Brothers)
