Prince kicks off UK tour with 34-song set in Birmingham

US singer brings 3rd Eye Girl back to the UK for his first gig in the city since 1995

Prince and 3rd Eye Girl returned to the UK last night playing a 34-song set at Birmingham’s LG Arena (May 15).

The epic set covered classics from his back catalogue, material that will feature on a forthcoming album with 3rd Eye Girl, ‘Plectrum Electrum’, a track he wrote for Vanity 6 in 1982, ‘Nasty Girl’, and a cover of Wild Cherry’s ‘Play That Funky Music’.

It was the first time Prince had visited Birmingham in 19 years and, answering a tweet sent out via the 3rd Eye Girl account, many fans turned up wearing purple. They were met by a banner covering the stage that read ‘Welcome To Funk’, and although the band began 40 minutes after the scheduled start time, they managed to play for just under two and a half hours.
