Prince’s Purple Rain jacket and shirt sold for over £70k each

Boots and necklace from 'Diamonds and Pearls' video also sold

Earlier this week (June 26) it was reported that the shirt and motorcycle jacket Prince wore in Purple Rain was going up for auction. The eBay sale included the memorabilia from the 1985 movie separately.

The shirt is the high-collared white shirt featuring a tiered front, pearl buttons and frilly cuffs. A purple label on the inside collar reads “Prince”. Its starting price was £2,240.

The corduroy motorcycle jacket is black with a white pattern. It has padded shoulders and leather cuffs inlaid with pearl buttons. The jacket has minor stains on the cuffs and armpit, and had a starting price of £4,480.

It has now been revealed by The Guardian that the shirt and jacket have sold for $96,000 – just over £72,000 – each. Other items sold included: a pair of knee-high, high-heeled boots from the 1988 Lovesexy tour ($17,920); a necklace from the “Diamonds and Pearls” video ($8,320); and another white shirt from the Purple Rain tour ($32,000).

Profiles in History founder Joe Maddalena told The Guardian: “Probably the signature thing he is known for is Purple Rain. It’s what made his career. It’s probably what he’ll be remembered for always. To have an important piece like this is pretty astonishing and an amazing opportunity.”

The sale, which is running from July 1-3, has 1,700 other items for sale as part of Hollywood Auction 83. These include Sylvester Stallone’s boxer boots from Rocky 2 and Mr T’s boxing robe from Rocky 3; an original Star Wars script from 1975, James Cameron’s sketches for monster design from Aliens, Christopher Reeve’s cape from Superman 3 and Steven Spielberg’s director chair from the Back To The Future trilogy.
