Queens Of The Stone Age headline Reading Festival for the first time with lights and lasers

Josh Homme and co bring hit packed set to the Main Stage

Queens Of The Stone Age headlined the Reading Festival for the first time in their career tonight (August 22) as they closed the first day of the bash with a hit-packed 16-song set.

Arriving onstage as green lazers shot out out from the Main Stage alongside circular lights onstage which counted the band in from 20 seconds, Josh Homme’s band kicked off their set with ‘You Think I Ain’t Worth A Dollar, But I Feel Like A Millionaire’ from their 2002 album ‘Songs For The Deaf’ before veering into fan favourite and hit single ‘No One Knows’ from the same LP.

The band have played the festival several times since they made their debut at Reading and Leeds Festivals in 2000. Reflecting on their first show at the event, Homme said: “The first time we played here was at 1 o’clock. Now it’s 10 o’clock. That means we’re now 9 hours better. So it should be pretty much fucking smooth sailing from now on.”

The band then tore into ‘Smooth Sailing’ from their 2013 album ‘…Like Clockwork’.

Later on in the set, ahead of ‘The Vampyre Of Time And Memory’, Homme said: “Right so it’s such a modern fucking world everybody, take your phone out and take a picture of everyone. Everyone hold their phones up.” As the phones lit up the crowd, he added: “That’s the modern world for you. Welcome to the modern world.”

The band played a host of hits from their back catalogue including ‘Little Sister’, ‘Sick, Sick, Sick’ and ‘Go With The Flow’ alongside five tracks from their 2013 LP such as ‘My God Is The Sun’ and ‘I Sat By The Ocean’. Homme also got behind the piano for ‘If I Had A Tail’.

Introducing ‘Feel Good Hit Of The Summer’, the singer later joked with the crowd: “Reading do you feel good? Reading do you feel as good as we do?”

Wrapping up their set with ‘A Song For The Dead’ Homme signed off by saying: “Reading thank you so much. I’m saying goodbye and fucking goodnight. Have a great weekend. We hope you get shit faced and end up fucking sleeping in a ditch.”
