R Kelly posted his $750,000 bail yesterday afternoon (June 6) and was released after spending a night in the cells.
Under the terms of bail, he cannot have any contact with minors other than his own children and cannot leave Florida without his lawyer. The star, arrested on Wednesday (June 5) and charged on 21 counts of child pornography, faces 15 years in prison and a fine of $150,000. He is expected to return to Cook County near Chicago in Illinois, where the offences are said to have occurred, later today (June 7).
Specific details of the charges he is to face were revealed during the Polk County hearing. There are seven prosecutable acts under Illinois child pornography laws, involving intercourse, oral sex, urination, masturbation, exhibition, fondling and other sexual contact. For each of these acts R Kelly is charged with videotaping them, performing them in the videotape and enticing a minor to participate in them. All charges relate to one girl born in September 1984.
The charges stem from a videotape that is said to show the embattled star having sex with a 14-year-old girl. The 26-minute tape was sent anonymously to the Chicago Sun-Times in February. The paper turned the video over to the police. The tape allegedly depicts R Kelly and the girl in a room engaged in various sex acts, including R Kelly urinating on the girl. Copies of it have become a best-selling bootleg in New York and Chicago.
Chicago Police and Cook County prosecutors said a thorough investigation, including interviews of some 50 witnesses, determined R Kelly and an underage girl were the people on the tape. And FBI forensics experts determined the tape was authentic, they told The Chicago Tribune.
