R KELLY has been working on the debut single by SYLEENA JOHNSON, the artist being tipped to emulate the success of his former collaborator AALIYAH.
Kelly’s series of fruitful collaborations started back in 1994 when he teamed up with the then 15-year-old Aaliyah to produce her debut album, ‘Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number’. However, their creative partnership came to an abrupt end when rumours emerged that the couple had allegedly married.
Kelly then went on to write for the previously unknown duo, Changing Faces, and their hit single ‘G.H.E.T.T. O.U.T’ helped forge a new breed of hip hop inspired soul song-writing entitled ‘ghetto realism’ which contained conversational lyrics which captured the melodrama of many an urban romance.
Kelly showed this approach off most effectively when he teamed up with a former girlfriend, a singer called Sparkle on the underground hit ‘Be Careful’. Since then, Kelly has teamed up once more Changing Faces for their current album as well as his own, 2000’s ‘TP2.com’.
With that collaborative pedigree behind him, much is expected of Kelly’s work with Johnson, whose debut single, ‘I Am Your Woman’ drops in the US on February 12, and is taken from her April-bound album, ‘Chapter 1: Love, Pain & Forgiveness’.
