But John Lydon hands back his Inspiration Award at the Q ceremony...
RADIOHEAD have been named BEST ACT IN THE WORLD at the Q AWARDS in LONDON this afternoon (October 29), while former SEX PISTOL JOHN LYDON picked up the INSPIRATION AWARD.
Radiohead pipped U2, REM, Manic Street Preachers, Stereophonics and Travis to their gong during the ceremony at the Park Lane Hilton, while Lydon was honoured as an artist who has left his mark and influenced future generations.
However, Lydon seemed singularly unimpressed with his award, saying it meant nothing and handing it to someone in the front row as he returned to his left the stage. He was also short on anarchic punk behaviour prefering instead to get happily drunk with friends and family raising just a little noise. Liam Gallagher was also much quieter than last year when he constantly haranguing Kylie Minogue as she handed out awards.
Other winners included Ash, who picked up Best Single for ‘Burn Baby Burn’, Gorillaz, who picked up Best Video for ‘Clint Eastwood’, after being embarrassingly beaten to the crown at the MTV Awards by Fatboy Slim, Starsailor who picked up the Best Newcomer gong, Manic Street Preachers, who were Best Live Act and Travis, who came away with a Best Album title for ‘The Invisible Band’.
Other veteran names to be honoured included Brian Eno who was given this year’s Special Award, reluctant star Kate Bush, awarded the Classic Songwriter title, and Elvis Costello, who picked up the Q Merit Award. U2, currently on tour in the US, were named Q Editor’s Choice.
Kate Bush made a surprise public appearance to pick up her award in person, promoting talk of a return. Stereophonics
were the biggest losers, not picking up a single award despite their four nominations.
