The Axis Of Justice show raises funds to help the strikers out over the holiday period...

TOM MORELLO and SERJ TANKIAN’s AXIS OF JUSTICE gathered musicians from AUDIOSLAVE, RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, SLIPKNOT and PHANTOM PLANET in LOS ANGELES last night (December 18), in aid of striking grocery store workers.

Supermarket workers in California have been on strike, locked out of their jobs at several major supermarket chains since October, when pay and benefit negotiations reached a standstill. Axis of Justice sponsored the benefit to provide relief for LA area strikers during the holiday period.

The evening began with an all-star jam featuring Audioslave’s Tom Morello and Brad Wilk, [/a]’s Serj Tankian, RHCP bassist Flea, Phantom Planet’s Alex Greenwald and Sam Farrar, Boots Riley of The Coop, and Lester Chambers of The Chambers Brothers, performing the Curtis Mayfield classic ‘People Get Ready’.

Morello, billed as the Night Watchman, played a solo acoustic set of tracks, including ‘Union Song’ and ‘California’s Dark’. He dedicated ‘Maximum Fire Power’ to [a] and Joe Strummer saying they were “two fellows who really walked it like they talked it”.

“I have a feeling if they were around today they’d be on this stage,” he added.

Later Serj Tankian came onstage, backed by Morello and Wilk to perform spoken word, reading and singing poems on war and politics. “Thank you guys for coming out,” Tankian told the crowd. “This is amazing.”

Flea followed with his friend Tree on harmonica. The two performed a track from ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’.

Corey Taylor was the last artist to perform solo. The Slipknot and Stone Sour star played tracks including his own ‘Bother’, The Church’s ‘Under the Milky Way’, The Steve Miller Band’s ‘Fly Like an Eagle’ and Wild Cherry’s ‘Play That Funky Music’

The evening closed with another group rendition of ‘People Get Ready’, followed by ‘Time Has Come Today’.
