Hilly Kristal passes away from cancer

The founder of legendary New York club CBGB‘s has died.

Hilly Kristal passed away yesterday (August 28) from complications due to lung cancer.

CBGB‘s was a legendary club in the 1970’s, and was the first place to launch the careers of the likes of Ramones, Blondie, Patti Smith, Talking Heads, New York Dolls and Television.

The venue opened in 1973 in Manhattan’s Bowery neighbourhood. It closed in October 2006, with Kristal discussing plans to move the venue to Las Vegas, reports MTV News.
