Lead Ramone succumbs to cancer..
Joey Ramone, lead singer of punk heroes The Ramones has died at the age of 49 in a New York hospital.
The frontman had been suffering from lymphatic cancer – he did not respond to treatments given to him.
Born Jeffery Hyman in 1951 in the deprived Queens distict of New York he adopted the surname Ramone along with his bandmates Johnny, Tommy and Dee Dee when the band formed in 1974.
Taking their inspiration from a mixture of the Stooges and bubblegum pop The Ramones personified cartoon punk and in turn inspired a host of no nonsense punk bands including the Sex Pistols, The Clash, Blink 182 and The Offspring.
One listen to songs like ‘Blitzkrieg Bop’ and ‘Sheena Is A Punk Rocker’ was enough to convince anyone with a scintilla of rock ‘n’ roll in them that four chords, shades and a leather jacket was more than enough to create an unforgettable icon.
The Ramones split in 1996.
