Flea says Fox News host calling Red Hot Chili Peppers ‘worst band on the planet’ ‘doesn’t faze’ him

The band headlined Reading Festival yesterday (August 27)

Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea has reacted to a Fox News host’s negative comments about the band.

The controversial US news network made the announcement on its show” The Five after showing an item about Flea playing bass with a gorilla called Koko.

After the report, anchorman Greg Gutfeld said: “As most musicians know, this is a vast improvement over Red Hot Chili Peppers, who are the worst band on the planet.”

Speaking to NME at Reading, Flea said: “I remember seeing a poll recently that said people who watch Fox News knew less about world affairs than people who watch no news at all. It’s clearly a funny programme. It doesn’t faze me, not really.

“I heard that. It’s funny. I don’t care. They’re all welcome to hate us. God bless ’em.”

The bassist also told NME playing some of the band’s older songs all the time made him feel like his “cock’s gonna fall off”.

“Has there ever been a night where I’ve been like ‘If I play fucking ‘Give It Away’ again my cock’s gonna fall off’? Yes,” he said.

“There are moments of having a hard time finding the essence and spirit of a song, but in general it’s all about the people in the end. It’s all about connecting with the people.

“I try to keep myself in a place of being completely selfless about it and doing my best to use every song, whether it’s one I’ve heard a million times or a new one, as a vehicle for connecting with people and making them feel less alone in the world.”
