Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist guests on new Tinariwen album

Josh Klinghoffer has said 'It doesn't sound like some guy wanking all over their music'

Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer has spoken about guesting on the new album from Mali musicians Tinariwen.

He will feature on two tracks on the group’s sixth album, ‘Emmaar’, which is out later this month. Speaking to Rolling Stone, Klinghoffer said of his appearance on ‘Toumast Tincha’ and ‘Timadrit in Sahara’: “It doesn’t sound like some guy wanking all over their music.”

He explained: “I was a little self-conscious because I don’t necessarily like it when a white musician from LA steps on this beautiful, organic African thing. If I heard that was happening, I would probably roll my eyes. But being that it was me, I seized the moment and I played whatever I felt at the time, and it was really natural. It sounds like Tinariwen.”

Red Hot Chili Peppers are set to headline this summer’s Isle Of Wight Festival. The band will play Saturday June 14 on the Main Stage, following previously announced Friday June 13 headliners, Biffy Clyro. They join Rudimental, Calvin Harris and The 1975 on the bill. The show is Red Hot Chili Peppers’ first UK festival appearance since 2007. It will be their only UK show of 2014. Isle Of Wight Festival runs from June 12-15 in Seaclose Park.
