Refused added to Download line-up after Sonisphere cancellation

The Swedish hardcore band will now play a UK festival exclusive at Donington Park in June

Refused have been added to the bill at this year’s Download Festival following the cancellation of Sonisphere Festival.

The Swedish hardcore band were due to play Sonisphere, but last week the metal festival was pulled. Download will be Refused‘s only UK festival appearance.

Refused will appear at Download alongside other newly announced bands Kids In Glass Houses and Lower Than Atlantis. The festival, which takes place in Donington Park from June 8-10, will be headlined by The Prodigy, Metallica and Black Sabbath.

Of playing Download, Dennis Lyxzén of Refused has said: “We’re very excited to have been given the chance by the people at Download to play the festival and meet our UK fans for the first time in 15 or so years.”

Last week the organisers of Sonisphere Festival confirmed that this summer’s event was cancelled. Sonisphere was due to take place at Knebworth Park on July 6-8 with headline sets from Queen and Adam Lambert, Kiss and Faith No More. The bill also included Marilyn Manson, Evanescence, The Darkness, The Blackout and Skindred.

The festival’s organisers put out an official statement to explain the cancellation, which blamed the shelving on “a very challenging year [that] was more difficult than anticipated”. The organisers also described putting on the event in 2012 as “an impossible task”. There was no explicit mention of poor ticket sales, the reason widely speculated as the cause of the cancellation.
