Stars turn out for anti-war benefit

REM, Moby and Rufus Wainwright urge withdrawal of US troops

A host of stars including R.E.M’s Michael Stipe, Bright Eyes, Devendra Banhart and Moby appeared at a benefit concert in New York urging the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq (March 20).

The Bring ‘Em Home Now! event was held at the city’s Hammerstein Ballroom on the third anniversary of the Iraq invasion.

Performances came from Fischerspooner, Peaches and Rufus Wainwright with proceeds going to the Veterans For Peace and Iraq Veterans Against The War.

According to BBC News, Moby said: “I was raised by peace activists.”

Organisers have reported that 3,000 tickets were sold for the event,

which was also attended by anti-war protestor Cindy Sheehan whose son Casey was killed in Iraq in 2004, and who actress Susan Sarandon – also present at the event – hopes to play in an upcoming film.

“It’s awesome to me because there are more and more kids getting involved,” Sarandon said.
