STARS AND STIPE

Oh, and Neneh Cherry as well...

REM’s MICHAEL STIPE, BRIAN ENO, NENEH CHERRY, HOLLYWOOD star DENNIS HOPPER and author KURT VONNEGUT are all set to feature on a forthcoming DVD/CD multi-media release set to appear next year, NME.COM can exclusively reveal.

The stars have been assembled by One Giant Leap, a duo comprising Faithless founder member Jamie Catto and producer Duncan Bridgeman, who spent over a year traversing the globe to put together the stellar cast.

Catto and Bridgeman laid down the backing tracks for the album before they set off on the trip and simply asked those they encountered en route to add a contribution.

Aside from the many familiar names, including former PolicedrummerStewart Copeland, Maxi Jazz from Faithless and Linton Kwesi Johnson, Catto and Bridgeman assembled musicians in each of the places they visited, such as sarangi players in India and Ugandan drummers.

The pair also shot hours of film footage on their trip. They intend to distil it all into a 12-chapter film and album, each chapter exploring a different grandly-titled theme, for instance ‘Masks & Roles’ and ‘The Shadow & Inspiration’.

The pair managed to talk each of the celebrities into taking part in the recording by simply ‘cold-calling’ and asking them. Dennis Hopper was said to be so enthused by the idea that he rang fellow stars Harvey Keitel and Meryl Streep to encourage them to take part. He also passed over Harry Dean Stanton’s home phone number. However, Stanton was not so accommodating – telling the pair to “fuck off” for disturbing his afternoon nap.

The One Giant Leap collection will be released through Palm Pictures.
