And Fatboy Slim and the Manic Street Preachers also get a mention...

THE VERVE, OASIS, FATBOY SLIM and MANIC STREET PREACHERS all feature in a poll of the greatest Number One singles of all time, with JOHN LENNON’s ‘IMAGINE’, coming out on top.

The poll, in which 50,000 readers of the Observer newspaper compiled their favourite chart toppers from the last fifty years, saw both The Verve and Oasis in the Top Ten.

The Verve’s only UK Number One ‘The Drugs Don’t Work’ came seventh, attracting 2,116 votes, with Oasis’ ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ following at Number Eight with 1,997 votes.

Elsewhere, ‘If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next’ by the Manic Street Preachers came in at Number 20 with 1,461 votes, and Fatboy Slim’s ‘Praise You’ just made it into the Top 25.

Perhaps surprisingly, Madonna, David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix and the Beach Boys all failed to make it into the Top Ten, which did feature Lennon’s ‘Imagine’, Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, The Beatles’ ‘Hey Jude’ and ‘Dancing Queen’ by ABBA.

The Top Ten of the 100 greatest Number One singles runs:

1.’Imagine’ – John Lennon
