Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw has said that comments he made about refusing to play any Rihanna songs on his Breakfast Show this week after the singer cancelled an interview with him at the last minute were “tongue in cheek”.
Rihanna was due to appear on the early morning show on Monday (November 19) prior to her appearance at the Westfield Shopping Centre and performance at the Kentish Town Forum, as part of her ‘777 Tour’.
However, producers were informed just moments before she was due to arrive that Rihanna was feeling unwell and that she would no longer be able to speak to the host. This apparently angered Grimshaw, who was due to be play songs from her new album ‘Unapologetic’ all week on his show.
“I’m going to have a tantrum because it’s my favourite pop star. We’re not even mentioning her. We’re not gonna promote it now,” Grimshaw told his listeners, before adding: “We were kind of forced into having Rihanna as our Record Of The Week because we were going to do a big interview with her, but once it was cancelled we changed it. She ruined my week. Nice one Rihanna.”
He had now said on Twitter:
“I’ve not snubbed nor banned Rihanna. I’ve played her several times this week, been to see her play live and bought her album and loved it… what I said on air was tongue in cheek. It looks really serious written down :(“
Rihanna is on course to go straight to Number One in the UK with ‘Unapologetic’ comfortably ahead of its nearest rivals in this week’s midweek chart update.
