ROBBIE ROCKS!

The pop superstar has named his new outfit Tipsy McStagger...

Robbie Williams has formed a joke rock group as a side project to his solo career.

According to reports in the UK media this morning (June 16), the star, set to perform live for the first time this year at this evening’s Ian Dury tribute gig in London’s Brixton Academy, has named the outfit Tipsy McStagger. He is said to be planning some low-key shows this year.

The only other member of Tipsy McStagger to have been identified so far is Williams’ regular bassist Fil Eisler.

Williams has been spotted watching a number of rock gigs in London this spring including Dark Star, Nine Inch Nails and Alabama Thunderpussy.

Ironically the star’s long-awaited new single, due on July 31 through EMI is called ‘I Donna Wanna Rock DJ’. Insiders have claimed that it, like much of the material on the forthcoming album due in early autumn, reflects more dance elements in Williams‘ work.

Finally, you can read about Williams‘ performance at Brixton Academy – when he will join Ian Dury‘s band The Blockheads and a host of other names including Madness, The Clash’s Mick Jones and Topper Headon, Sex Pistol Glen Matlock and comedians Phill Jupitus and Mark Lamarr – on nme.com tomorrow morning (June 17).
