Killer Mike invited to attend White House Correspondents’ Dinner

It takes place a day after the Run The Jewels rapper gives a talk on race relations at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Run The Jewels rapper Killer Mike has been invited to attend this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

The annual event, which takes place this Saturday (April 25), sees key journalists and notable figures coming together to discuss key issues. Killer Mike will be covering the ceremony for Huffington Post. President Obama will be in attendance.

The event comes a day after the rapper gives a lecture on race relations at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on Friday (April 24) as part of the university’s Hip-Hop Speaker series. The rapper has frequently spoken and written about the topic over the past year, with the recent ‘Close Your Eyes (And Count to Fuck)’ video focussing on police brutality.

Run The Jewels released their second album ‘Run The Jewels 2’ last year, with the pair recently claiming that its follow-up will be “the hardest shit you’ve ever heard”.

Speaking to NME recently, El-P said plans for their third album were already underway. He revealed: “We’re chipping away at it, bit by bit, where we can. It’s hard to do on the road but we’re already feeling the urge to get it down and make it the hardest shit you’ve ever heard.”

Killer Mike said that their new material will be as political as on their second LP: “People talk about our rhymes being ‘dystopian’, like when we rap about police brutality and cameras on every corner and drones over Brooklyn and blood in the streets, we’re talking about some terrible future that hasn’t happened yet. Our songs aren’t some scorched-earth hellscape vision of shit to come. It’s happening right fucking now. It’s happening in Ferguson. It’s happening in New York. This shit is right here, right now.”

The hip-hop duo also look to be teaming up with Massive Attack, with images recently appearing on Twitter alongside a post from Killer Mike which read: “in the studio with massive attack right now. so… no big deal or anything. not bragging a lot. just talking here.”
