Run The Jewels’ Killer Mike diagnosed with shoulder injury after onstage attack at SXSW

The rapper had to fly home to see a doctor in Atlanta in the middle of the Texan festival

Killer Mike of Run The Jewels has revealed that he had to fly back to Atlanta to see his doctor after being attacked on stage at South By South West festival earlier this week.

The hip hop duo returned to the event in Austin, Texas to play Stubbs’ BBQ yesterday (March 20) and while onstage Mike addressed the incident which happened on Monday and saw a man walk onto the stage mid-set and seemingly attempt to punch rappers Killer Mike and El-P. Before they played ‘Banana Clipper’, El-P stated: “Last time we did this song, it was interrupted. Let’s not let that happen again.” Killer Mike added: “If you interrupt this song we’ll beat the fuck out of you.”

Mike commented that after the incident on Monday (March 16), “I flew home to see my doctor.” He then said that he doctor had diagnosed him with a torn rotator cuff shoulder injury, and advised him to wear a sling, but that Mike refused. “I was like, ‘doctor, I’m not leaving the road – the tour goes on!'” he added, to cheers from the crowd, who braved the rain to watch the act’s set.

Meanwhile, the man who attacked Run The Jewels during their performance at Spotify House allegedly accused the group of stealing his lyrics. The duo and their security removed the man from the stage, but reports and video footage suggests that he then attempted to fight members of the audience. Promoter Matt Sonzala later tweeted: “Was told that dude who attacked Run the Jewels is walking around downtown Austin talking to himself. No he wasnt arrested… Be safe yall. If youre in Austin keep your eyes open.”

Sonzala spoke to Buzzfeed Music about the incident, saying: “After he was thrown out, I walked out and asked police working the line to get in if they planned on arresting the man who just attempted to assault the band onstage. They come with me and we find him right around the corner from the venue — he’s sitting on a stoop, skull open, bleeding down his face. Police talk to him, come back and say to me they can’t arrest him based on my testimony alone.”

Sonzala also told Buzzfeed that the police said the man “claimed Run the Jewels owed him money and stole his lyrics”.
