Listen to Sam Fender and Holly Humberstone’s new version of ‘Seventeen Going Under’

The acoustic redux came alongside the news that Humberstone had won the 2022 BRITs Rising Star award

Sam Fender and Holly Humberstone have collaborated for a new acoustic version of the former’s hit single ‘Seventeen Going Under’.

The track’s pared-back reimagining has Fender and Humberstone trading lines back and forth while the former strums gently on an acoustic guitar. The mix is filled out with spatial atmospherics including subtle, yet tasteful strings and lashings of reverb on the two singers’ vocals.

Alongside the tune’s release came the announcement that Humberstone had won the 2022 BRITs Rising Star award. The singer-songwriter shared the news in a video wherein Fender – who won the very same award in 2019 – presents the trophy to her during what appears to the studio session that birthed the pair’s ‘Seventeen Going Under’ redux.

“I remember watching the BRITs with my parents each year and being totally awe struck by the artists coming together in what felt like another universe. Now to be named the BRITs Rising Star and nominated alongside two other incredible women, with the songs that started within those four walls at home is so mad,” Humberstone said of the honour.

As was the case in 2018 and 2020, all three nominees for this year’s prize (fka the Critics’ Choice award) were female solo artists. Griff took home the statue at the BRITs 2021, with Celeste winning at the ceremony the previous year.

Humberstone’s latest EP, ‘The Walls Are Way Too Thin’, came out last month. In a four-star review, NME hailed it as “a soul-baring triumph”.
