On balance, bookies don't think Smith will pull off the first Bond-theme number one
The bookies don’t quite think Sam Smith‘s Spectre theme ‘Writing’s On The Wall’ will reach the peak of the single’s charts, with Betway offering 3/1 on the track being a chart-topper at the time of writing.
Should Smith reach number one, he’d be the first to do so with a Bond theme.
Smith confirmed his recording of the theme earlier today, having previously stated that he “definitely wouldn’t” be producing the track. It will be released on September 25.
Smith said of the news: “This is one of the highlights of my career. I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line-up of some of my biggest musical inspirations.”
“I got called into the office with Barbara Broccoli and Sam Mendes and they gave me the script, I read the script… they said, ‘Have a go at the song’.”
“It’s the quickest I’ve ever written a song – it took 20 minutes – and they loved it! I love the song so much”.
Radiohead had previously been the favourites to record the theme track, with one punter putting £15,000 on the Oxford band turning out to be the film’s musical stars.
The film itself, meanwhile, is 4/1 to be the highest-grossing Bond movie yet. Spectre is due out on October 26. Odds via Betway.
