Singer admits "homophobia is still so present in our society"
Sam Smith has shared an Instagram account set up solely to abuse him for his sexuality.
Smith posted a screenshot of the ‘Gaysamsmith’ account yesterday (August 12). The account includes pictures of the singer alongside messages such as “we hate faggot Smith” and “he is gay but that’s okay, because we can all make fun of him”.
The pop singer said he chose to share the account with fans as a way of highlighting the issue of homophobia and how it continues to affect gay people on a daily basis.
“This genuinely doesn’t offend me cause I’m way too tick skinned when it comes to this kind of shit,” he wrote on Instagram. “But I just wanted to share this with everyone, so you can see how homophobia is still so present in our society!”
Smith is currently promoting the new Disclosure single ‘Omen’, on which he provides vocals. Smith teamed up once again with Guy and Howard Lawrence on the single from the electronic duo’s upcoming second album ‘Caracal’, which will be released in September.
The two acts had previously teamed up for the breakthrough hit ‘Latch’. It peaked at Number 11 on the UK’s Official Singles Chart in late 2012 and climbed to Number Seven in the US over 18 months later after becoming a sleeper hit there.
‘Caracal’ will also feature guest spots from Lorde, The Weeknd, Miguel, Kwabs and more. It follows on from 2013 chart-topping debut ‘Settle’.
