Sam Smith wins at BET Awards 2015 as Kendrick Lamar and Nicki Minaj perform – watch

Theannual ceremony took place in Los Angeles on Sunday (June 28)

Sam Smith was among the winners at this year’s BET Awards (Black Entertainment Television), which was held on Sunday night (June 28) in Los Angeles.

The British singer picked up the Best New Artist accolade but failed to appear on the night. Instead, actor Anthony Anderson accepted the award on Smith’s behalf, joking that he didn’t show up because “he’s white and didn’t think he would win”.

Other winners on the night included Nicki Minaj for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, Kendrick Lamar for Best Male Hip-Hop Artist, Beyoncé for Best Female R&B/Pop Artist and grime MC Stormzy for Best International Act UK. The Weeknd picked up the R&B and neo-soul Centric Award for ‘Earned It’.

Among those performing at the ceremony, Kendrick Lamar ran through ‘To Pimp A Butterfly’ track ‘Alright’, Janelle Monae performed ‘Yoga’ and The Weeknd delivered ‘Earned It’. Watch beneath.

The BET Awards also saw Diddy fall into a hole whilst performing with Lil Kim and other to mark the 20th anniversary of Bad Boy Records.
