Sam Smith’s damaged vocal cords force further gig cancellations

Singer pulls out of scheduled shows in Japan and the Philippines

Sam Smith has been forced to cancel further tour dates as he continues to struggle with a small vocal cord haemorrhage.

The singer was last week ordered to rest by doctors, causing the postponement of a number of Australian shows. Taking to Instagram today, Smith revealed that he’s now travelling to the US to see a specialist, and will not be able to perform this week’s scheduled gigs in Japan and the Philippines.

“Very upset about Japan and Manilla dates,” he wrote. “I’ve just left Australia and I’m on my way to the states to see a specialist to see what to do from there… This is fucking horrid.”

The update follows last Friday’s (May 1) post to Instagram, where Smith revealed he hadn’t “spoken a word in three days”.

“Just to let all my beautiful fans know, I’m ok. I am insanely relaxed and am somewhere in the middle of Australia with no phone, no laptop and I haven’t spoken a word in three days. Trying my absolute best to be back on my feet and singing for next week. So amazing to have this time to turn off, but it does make me realise how much I love what I do, and how much I miss you all when I’m not on stage. I hope you are all happy and healthy wherever you are. I’m gonna go back to my black and white movies and pretend I’m Judy Garland for a few more days xx”

Smith is next scheduled to perform on May 15 in Alabama.
