Singer says he would have ‘crawled off stage’ if Madonna’s accident had happened to him
Sam Smith says he would have cried if he’d suffered a similar mishap to Madonna falling off stage at last month’s BRIT Awards.
Smith says he respected Madonna’s ability to carry on with her performance at the ceremony at London’s O2.
Speaking to Stylist, Smith said: “I like to think if I’d been like Madonna that I’d have powered through. But the chances are, I’d have cried and crawled off stage.”
Smith added: “I used to fall up the escalator on the Tube all the time. I’d do what every guy does, and look back as if there’s something wrong with the ground.”
The singer is due to resume touring next week, having cancelled a show in Milan with laryngitis on Monday. His nine-date UK run begins on Monday (March 16).
Madonna blamed Giorgio Armani, the designer of the cape she wore, for her BRITs fall. Armani responded that Madonna is “very difficult”, causing Madonna to say: “I don’t know why he said that. He made me a very lovely outfit and I was very appreciative. He sent me flowers afterward and applauded me for getting back on stage.”
Smith is set for the Top 10 this week with Lay Me Down, a new version of his debut single featuring John Legend which is in aid of Comic Relief.
Sam Smith will play:
Glasgow O2 Academy (March 16-17)
Manchester O2 Apollo (19-20)
Wolverhampton Civic Hall (22-23)
Brixton O2 Academy (25-27)
