Sam Smith has spoken about being repeatedly compared to Adele, saying “it just annoys me”.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Smith addressed being compared to the ‘Rolling In The Deep’ singer – most recently by DJ Howard Stern on his radio show earlier this week. “It just annoys me that people can’t digest two pop stars singing really personal songs who don’t look like normal pop stars,” he said.
Smith also discussed his rise to stardom, stating that the secret behind his success was his use of imagination. “I picture things happening in my head,” he said. “And when I picture things happening every single day of my life, it tends to happen. Manifesting things in your mind is quite powerful.”
He continued: “The way I stay normal is carry on saying what I’m saying. When I’m sad, I’m sad. And when I’m having a down day, I’m having a down day. It’s important not to pretend everything’s OK.”
Howard Stern said on his Sirius XM radio show this week that Smith was a “fat ugly motherfucker” and branded him the “male Adele”. “I like that he’s chubby and gay. That’s why I love him. He’s one of those guys I feel like, he’s really good, but I feel like that will be his only hit song – beautiful voice. That’s how good that song is. He’s fat and he’s gay and little girls worship him. That’s when you know you have a good song and a good voice,” Stern said.
Smith later responded to the comments by tweeting that he “can’t believe what he’s read” and telling his fans to “ignore” Stern.
