The Cure to headline Shockwaves NME Awards Big Gig 2009

Godlike Geniuses sign up for London O2 Arena gig

The Cure are set to celebrate being crowned Godlike Geniuses at next year’s Shockwaves NME Awards by headlining the annual Big Gig.

Following news that the band will pick up the honour at the 2009 ceremony – to be held at London‘s Brixton Academy on February 25 – Robert Smith and co are now confirmed to make the small hop across the capital and headline the show a day later.

The Shockwaves NME Awards Big Gig 2009 takes place at the capital’s O2 Arena on February 26, with The Cure promising a career-spanning headline set.

“I think it is a recognition of all The Cure has done over the years, so it would be pretty dumb to accept the award with a, ‘hey! Have you heard our new stuff?’. So we won’t be doing that!” declared Smith. “We are not going to turn up and start being weird!

“We’ll play some new stuff, some old stuff and some stuff from in between, trying to distil 30 years into the set!”

As with last year – which saw Godlike Geniuses Manic Street Preachers headline with Kaiser Chiefs, Klaxons, Bloc Party, The Cribs and Johnny Marr also playing – this year’s show will also feature a full bill, which will be announced soon.
