But singer says they need to become friends again before considering a reunion
The classic Smashing Pumpkins line-up are “all in communication”, according to Billy Corgan.
The singer confirmed in a new video on Facebook that he has resumed contact with bassist D’arcy Wretzky for the first time in 17 years, following recent similar reunions with guitarist James Iha and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin.
But Corgan said it was important for the band to renew their friendships before they considered playing together as a band again.
Corgan said: “First off, we’re back in contact again, the band. I’ve been in communication with D’arcy for the first time in 16 or 17 years and it’s awesome to have my friend back. So we’re all in communication and my primary interest in the old band was us having good relationships again.”
Iha recently reunited with Corgan on stage, while Chamberlin has returned to playing live with the current Smashing Pumpkins line-up. Wretzky said earlier this year that she would consider playing bass with Corgan again, leading to the pair re-establishing contact.
Talking about a full reunion of the line-up behind albums such as ‘Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness’ and ‘Siamese Dream’, Corgan said: “We’re not interested in going out to play just because there’s a big stack of money there. Of course the business is part of what goes on, but the band was never about that. If the band ever should be again in that form, it should be about the music.”
Smashing Pumpkins’ most recent album was ‘Monuments To An Elegy’ in 2014. Corgan recently became the president of wrestling company Impact Ventures.
