HMV to do own poll after download rule change

HMV will stop using the UK’s Official Chart as a basis for the selling of singles.

The retail chain will dispense with their instore chart wall, which currently contains physical copies of tracks in the official chart, and will instead use their own poll made up of their own biggest sellers.

HMV spokesperson Gennaro Castaldo explained: “As more and more downloads make up the chart, it doesn’t make sense to have the chart wall.

We are going to stock our own sales. I suspect all retailers are going to follow their own chart.”

However their instore album chart will still be drawn from the official Top 40.

The move follows rule changes in the singles chart which allowed any song purchased online to be counted towards the rundown.

Sunday’s (January 7) chart, the first under the new rules, saw a number of re-entries due to downloads, with Snow Patrol‘s 2006 release ‘Chasing Cars’ jumping up to Number Nine.

The Automatic and Nelly Furtado also benefited from the new rules, with their old releases returning to the Top 40.
