Sonic Youth guitarist Lee Ranaldo is offering free guitar lessons to students in New York.
Ranaldo, who released new album ‘Last Night On Earth’ alongside The Dust earlier this year, will stage a guitar workshop on October 28 at New York’s Other Music.
A post on Matador Records’ Matablog about the guitar lessons, states: “Lee will be hosting his first Guitar Clinic, having a discussion and demonstration of his weapon of choice. What’s more, you’ll not only walk away with a new found respect for and knowledge of the Axe, you’ll also walk away with a signed poster.”
Earlier this year, two guitars stolen at a Sonic Youth gig 13 years ago were returned to Ranaldo and frontman Thurston Moore. The band’s rented truck full of their equipment was stolen in the middle of the night before a festival appearance in Orange County in 1999 with the instruments subsequently turning up years later in Belgium.
In 2011, Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon announced that they were separating after 27 years of marriage. The announcement raised doubts over the future of Sonic Youth after their record label Matador revealed that plans for the band remained “uncertain”. Speaking of this, Ranaldo said:”I think after 30 years – unfortunate as it was the way it came about – maybe it’s a good time for an extended break. If we do come back together, I imagine we’ll be rejuvenated in a bunch of different ways and maybe looking to explore new avenues at that point.”
