And he tells NME.COM: "It's the greatest record we've ever made"...

SPIRITUALIZED mainman JASON PIERCE has told NME.COM the “energy” of White Stripes made him radically reconsider how he approached making the band’s new LP ‘AMAZING GRACE’.

The record, released by Sanctuary on September 8, showcases a feedback, garage-driven sound totally at odds with the mammoth orchestration of their last album, 2001’s ‘Let It Come Down’. And Pierce, who calls ‘Amazing Grace’ the greatest record he’s made in his career, admits the prevalence of raw garage rock over the last couple of years influenced his thinking.

He said: “I was excited about people putting guitars around their neck and making noise again rather than showing fantastic ability or showing the kind of intellectualism that sometimes comes into music.

“The thing that excited me when I started was the energy of music, what you could call the rock ’n’ roll in it. What I liked about [a][/a] and all the music that was coming up in their slipstream was that it was just about putting a guitar over your shoulder again and saying, ‘Hey, listen to this sound we’re making.’

But Pierce did give those bands a word of warning.

“Having said that, I think that people are trying a little bit too hard to be authentic at the moment, and that’s bullshit. You can make good music without worrying too much about where you recorded it. I think people should be careful that they don’t slip too far the other way. The song is the important thing.”
