Spoon perform new song ‘I Ain’t The One’ and cover David Bowie and Prince

Mexico City show marked the band’s first gig this year

Spoon paid tribute to both David Bowie and Prince as they played their first show of 2016 at Mexican festival Marvin at the weekend.

The set featured just singer Britt Daniel and keyboardist Alex Fischel as Spoon embarked on their first gig for six months. In the set, new song ‘I Ain’t The One’ was the band’s second airing of new material aired in public since their 2014 album ‘They Want My Soul’. Watch below.

Spoon also previewed new song ‘Satellite’ at a gig in Texas in January 2015, this time with the full band line-up including bassist Rob Pope, drummer Jim Eno and keyboardist Eric Harvey.

As well as playing Prince’s 1986 song ‘Under The Cherry Moon’, Daniel and Fischel covered ‘I Can’t Give Everything Away’, the last song on Bowie’s final album ‘Blackstar’.

Festival Marvin also saw sets by ESG, The Polyphonic Spree, Lower Dens, Fat Tony and A Band Of Bitches.

Although Spoon’s success in Britain has been limited, their past three albums – ‘They Want My Soul’, ‘Transference’ in 2010 and ‘Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga’ in 2007 – have reached the Top Ten in the US.

Daniel and Fischel’s set at Festival Marvin is the only scheduled Spoon show this year.
