Spoon unveil new track ‘Do You’ – listen

The track will appear on the band's forthcoming new album 'They Want My Soul'

Spoon have unveiled a new song, ‘Do You’, from their forthcoming album ‘They Want My Soul’ – listen to it above.

The track will appear on the Austin, Texas rockers’ eighth album, which is released on August 4. It is the follow-up to 2010’s ‘Transference’.

Speaking to NME, the band’s frontman Britt Daniel revealed that both AC/DC and Dr Dre have influenced the album, which was recorded in Florida and Los Angeles.

“When I was growing up, AC/DC were one of those bands a certain type of person liked,” he said. “Me and my friends liked new wave: Julian Cope, The Cure, Echo And The Bunnymen. People with AC/DC patches on their jean jackets called us the ‘queer bitches’… I finally gave it a chance. I’d been missing out. I think it had an impact on the album.”

The other big inspiration, he said, was Dr Dre’s ‘2001’, which was the spur for the hip-hop-influenced track ‘Inside Out’. “To begin with it was just vocal and piano,” he said. “Just a melancholy piano rhythm, but it didn’t quite work. Just for fun we had Jim [Eno, drummer] play a Dre-like drum beat over it. Now it’s my favourite track on the album.”
