Fred Durst's pals win the nu-metal battle for the top...

Staind have pipped nu-metal rivals DEFTONES to the top slot in this week’s US BILLBOARD ALBUM CHART.

Staind‘s ’14 Shades Of Grey’ sold 221,000 to debut at Number One, while Deftones‘s self-titled effort entered at Number Two after first week sales of 167,000.

The performance of Staind‘s third LP could not match their previous effort, 2001’s ‘Break The Cycle’, which sold 716,000 copies in its first week.

It’s the second week in a row that two major rock acts have debuted in the Top Three on the Billboard 200. Last week, Marilyn Manson‘s ‘The Golden Age of Grotesque’ and Cold’s ‘Year of the Spider’ arrived at Number One and Number Three respectively. Both plummet down the chart this week – ‘…Grotesque’ from 1-21 while ‘Year Of The Spider’ careers from Three to 29.

‘American Idol’ winner Kelly Clarkson is among the artists whose Top Ten albums saw a boost in sales. Her ‘Thankful’ LP jumped back up from Seven to Three.

The biggest selling album of the year, 50 Cent’s ‘Get Rich or Die Tryin'”, is down from Two to Five.
