Staten Island declares November 9 to be ‘Wu-Tang Clan Day’

A worthy accolade, if you ask us

The New York City borough of Staten Island has formally recognised November 9 as ‘Wu-Tang Clan Day’ in honour of the pioneering hip-hop group.

The Wu celebrated the 25th anniversary of their classic debut album ‘Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)’ today, with the group appearing on the US breakfast show Good Morning America to talk about the lasting impact of the record and perform ‘Protect Ya Neck’.

The collective have now been honoured by their hometown – which they affectionately refer to as ‘Shaolin’ – as the borough of Staten Island declared that November 9 will henceforth be known as ‘Wu Tang Clan Day’ in the region.

The news was confirmed by RZA last night (November 8) at a New York screening of the short film For The Children: 25 Years of Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), where he addressed the record’s special milestone (you can see the documentary below).

“We at 25 years, we know we have arrived at our destination. We’re grateful for everyone that’s been a part of this,” RZA said. “When we said 36 Chambers, the word chamber was giving everybody an idea that you will go through different chambers in your life. It’s many things that you have to pass through in order to master yourself.”

The Wu recently performed together on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, with the group inviting the son of the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard to perform his verses in his memory.
