He's called it the "beginning of a new chapter"
Stormzy has announced he has signed a deal between his #MERKY label and Atlantic Records.
The grime MC released his debut album ‘Gang Signs & Prayer‘ on his label last year, with it distributed by Warner’s ADA. It reached Number One on the Official UK Albums Chart, and finished at Number 10 on the year-end chart.
Stormzy confirmed the deal on his Instagram page yesterday (January 19), calling it the “beginning of a new chapter”.
He added: “Looking forward to delivering more music, more bodies of work and to start developing and working on new talent on the #MERKY roster. Let’s work.”
In a statement, CEO and chairman of WMUK and CEO of recorded music at WMG Max Lousada said: “Stormzy and #MERKY are a cultural force whose music makes everyone listen. Talent, truth, energy and relevance – they represent music at its most powerful. We’re proud to have them in the family.”
Last month (December 21), Stormzy performed at the funeral of the father of one of his fans after being invited to the service on Twitter.
The Croydon MC appeared at the service after responding to a message from Nasir Bockarie, whose father passed away on December 8. Writing to Stormzy, Bockarie revealed that he and his dad shared a love for the track ‘Blinded By Your Grace’, which featured on his debut album.
