Suede have said that they took cocaine to prepare for making the video for their iconic single ‘Animal Nitrate’.
The track, which was released 20 years ago in 1993, is the latest track focused on in NME‘s Song Stories video feature. Scroll down to watch the footage now. Talking about the making of the tune, Brett Anderson says: “We were rehearsing it for months and months and Bernard (Butler, ex-Suede guitarist) kept asking me if I had any lyrics for it and I wanted something special to say over the top of what he’s written. I like the fact it’s a song about a dark, murky world that ended up in the Top 10.”
Discussing the video for the song, Anderson explained that they initially struggled to match the energy of their live shows for the performance in the video and so turned to alternative methods of inspiration. “We weren’t experienced enough at the time to just do it on queue. I think we ended up getting a load of coke in an jumping around like lunatics. Back in the days when we used to do things like that.”
Suede will release their new album ‘Bloodsports’ on March 18. The band have also announced that they will play an intimate show at The Barfly in Camden on March 4 for XFM, which they will follow-up with a big London show at Alexandra Palace on March 30.
Speaking about the new Suede material, frontman Brett Anderson told NME previously: “The album is called ‘Bloodsports’. It’s about lust, it’s about the chase, it’s about the endless carnal game of love. It was possibly the hardest we ever made but certainly is the most satisfying. Its 10 furious songs have reclaimed for me what Suede was always about: drama, melody and noise.”
The tracklisting to ‘Bloodsports’ is as follows:
‘Barriers’
‘Snowblind’
‘It Starts And Ends With You’
‘Sabotage’
‘For The Strangers’
‘Hit Me’
‘Sometimes I Feel I’ll Float Away’
‘What Are You Not Telling Me?’
‘Always’
‘Faultlines’
