Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley removes Lavigne from his name

Musician changed his name upon marrying Avril Lavigne in 2006

Sum 41‘s Deryck Whibley has been given permission to remove his ex-wife Avril Lavigne’s surname from his own name, the Toronto Sun reports.

Whibley married the pop singer in 2006 and changed his name to Deryck Jason Lavigne Whibley. The couple split in 2009 and were divorced the following year. However, he only filed to legally remove her name from his in 2013.

TMZ reports that an LA judge approved the name change last Thursday (June 12). Whibley is now enganged to model Ariana Cooper and is recovering from a prolonged hospital stay after his liver and kidneys had collapsed due to heavy drinking.

“I’ve been very sick in the hospital for a month and was pretty sick for a few weeks leading up to my trip to the hospital. The reason I got so sick is from all the hard boozing I’ve been doing over the years,” he wrote on

He continued: “I finally realised I can’t drink anymore. If I have one drink the docs say I will die. I’m not preaching or anything but just always drink responsibly.”
