Super Furry Animals have become the first band in history to sponsor a football league team.
The band announced their new partnership with Cardiff City FC at the club’s home, Ninian Park, on September 9.
Bassist Guto Pryce and vocalist Gruff Rhys joined members of the team and five aliens wearing City shirts.
Guto said: ‘We are very proud to be associated with arguably the greatest football side in the world, even though some of the group support Bangor City.”
Meanwhile, Cardiff City chairman Steve Borley commented: “We are very happy to be associated with the band and their successes…I believe the partnership of Cardiff City and the Super Furry Animals will be beneficial for both parties.”
SFA were partly responsible for the re-examination of Cardiff City player Robin Friday – featuring him on the cover of single ‘The Man Don’t Give A Fuck’. Their video for ‘Play It Cool’ featured members of the band in a computer football game.
Skint Records recently inked a deal to sponsor Brighton FC while both Wet Wet Wet and Teenage Fanclub have sponsored Scottish teams.
The new SFA/Cardiff City shirts can be obtained through the band’s web-site (www.superfurry.com) or at their merchandising stalls on tour.
Meanwhile, it is rumoured that the next single from the band will be ‘Wherever I Lay My Phone (That’s My Home)’, from their ‘Guerilla’ album.
