Band will release new material ahead of Wales' campaign this summer
Super Furry Animals will release their first single in seven years ahead of Wales competing in Euro 2016.
A press release confirms that the Welsh band, bouyed by the success of their 2015 reunion, will release their first new music since 2009’s ‘Dark Days/Light Years album’ ahead of their nation’s football team competing in this summer’s European Championship. ‘Bing Bong’ will be released on May 13.
The song is not yet online and it is not clear if the song will be specifically football-related, however the press release cites the “inspirational rise” of the Welsh football team and proclaims the song sees the band “emerging from the studio to spread hope and harmony in a reinvention of the totemic, communal anthem.”
A band statement says: “Let’s come together this summer, in song and let that song be ‘Bing Bong’. Please await further transmissions.”
Further information on the single is to be announced in the coming weeks, with music, live performance and video remaining under wraps until the band conclude a series of imminent festival dates in the United States.
The song will not be the official Wales anthem, however, which has been recorded by Manic Street Preachers.
As previously reported, Super Furry Animals will play a gig in France to coincide with Wales’ first game of their Euro 2016 campaign.
This summer’s competition represents the first time Wales have qualified for a major tournament since the 1958 World Cup – and their first ever appearance at the Euros. Wales play Slovakia in Bordeaux for their first game on June 11 before later facing England and Russia.
Super Furry Animals will play live in Toulouse on June 10.
Last year saw the band open Wales’ European qualifier against Belgium with an on-field performance at the Cardiff City Stadium.
Also confirmed today is the news that Super Furry Animals will headline Margate festival By The Sea in September.
