SVEN VATH has announced Canadian techno DJ RICHIE HAWTIN is to be resident at his hugely successful COCOON club night in IBIZA for 2001.
The DJ joins Vath as resident for Cocoon’s second full year in residency at the Amnesia club on Monday nights.
“Ibiza has needed a change in music policies for a long time,” explained Vath on the success of his night. “There’s a lot of English DJs playing the same style of (trance) music. I want to bring techno – good electronic music onto the island.”
Despite predictions to the contrary, Cocoon managed to attract between 2,500 and 3,000 people every Monday for the entire season, with a bill that consisted almost entirely of techno DJs in the trance-centric climate of Ibiza. Vath predicts that Cocoon in 2001 will see the return of some of 2000’s most successful guests, including Carl Cox, Jeff Mills and Westbam.
“Ibiza is becoming a place for mainstream clubbing music,” Vath admitted “I think, though, that this island still has the spirit like no other place in the world in summertime, but I think we have to get more interesting things happening in the night.”
The news follows Cream’s appointment of rising star Timo Maas as their resident for Ibiza this year. The Liverpool-based club also traditionally holds its residency at Amnesia.
Sven Vath releases a compilation album entitled ‘Sven Vath Retrospective 1990-1997’ on February 9.
