Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker on his ‘Justin Timberlake-type’ new album: ‘I thought, fuck it’

The Australian band release the highly anticipated 'Currents' in July

Tame Impala frontman Kevin Parker has revealed more details about what to expect from the group’s forthcoming third album.

The Perth-based outfit release third album ‘Currents’ on July 17 via Fiction, following 2012’s ‘Lonerism’ and 2010 debut ‘Innerspeaker’. Having recently described the LP as both “groove-based” and “club-friendly”, Parker has now stated that he was “more open minded” whilst recording ‘Currents’.

Speaking in a new interview with DIY, Parker said: “I thought [‘Lonerism’] was pop with a psychedelic pinch to it. I guess I have the same sentiment with this album,” adding: “Every melody I’ve ever written is a pop melody. For me, pop is a flavour that you can bring in and out of a song, it’s like an ingredient. If you’re a chef, you sprinkle in a bit. In the last few years, being in the music game, it makes you realise those ‘rules’ are boundaries.”

The singer added: “I was a lot more open minded [on ‘Currents’]. On previous albums I’ve been interested in making old albums sound new, or trying to redirect new elements into the old. This time I felt that might be restricting my arsenal. I bought one of those giant workstation synthesisers, you know, like a Justin Timberlake-type artist, just to see what would happen. I thought, fuck it.”

Ahead of the album’s July release, Tame Impala have so far revealed the tracks ‘Cause I’m A Man’, ‘Disciples’, ‘Eventually’ and ‘Let It Happen’.

The ‘Currents’ tracklisting is as follows:

‘Let It Happen’
‘The Moment’
‘Yes I’m Changing’
‘The Less I Know The Better’
‘Past Life’
‘Cause I’m A Man’
‘Reality In Motion’
‘New Person, Same Old Mistakes’

Tame Impala will play a handful of UK and Ireland dates later this year. They are as follows:

Electric Picnic Festival (September 4)
End Of The Road Festival (5)
Glasgow Barrowland (8)
Liverpool Olympia (9)
Isle of Wight Bestival (10)
