The rapper claimed that he’ll run for office in 2020, during his acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards last weekend (August 30). West said, “It’s not about me. It’s about ideas. New ideas. People with ideas. People who believe in truth. And yes, as you probably could’ve guessed by this moment, I have decided in 2020 to run for President.”
Swift, who presented West with the Video Vanguard award at the MTV VMAs, has now hinted at a political team-up between the pair which would see West running for President and Swift being his Vice President if successful.
The singer revealed on Twitter that West had sent her flowers following the VMAs, writing in a caption, “Awww Kanye sent me the coolest flowers!! #KanTay2020 #BFFs”. See the tweet below.
Following the news of West running for President, Donald Trump told Rolling Stone, “He’s actually a different kind of person than people think. He’s a nice guy. I hope to run against him someday.”
Trump continued, “He’s said very nice things about me in the past… extremely positive things. I was actually watching, I saw [his speech] and I said, ‘That’s very interesting. I wonder who gave him that idea?'”
Rihanna has also backed West in his run for office. The singer told Entertainment Tonight, “People are voting for [Donald] Trump; who wouldn’t vote for Kanye? I’m really, really elated with his speech. His speech was incredible.”
A representative from the White House responded to the news too. White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told Billboard that he looks “forward to seeing what slogan [Kanye] chooses to embroider on his campaign hat”.
