Taylor Swift will donate all proceeds from her new single ‘Welcome to New York’ to the city’s public schools.
As reported by Billboard, the singer announced the news on US daytime talk show The View yesterday (October 29).
“The fans were wonderful enough to make it Number One on iTunes, and it is selling really, really well, which is good, because I’m donating all my proceeds to New York City public schools,” Swift told the audience.
As the title suggests, the track is dedicated to the city that the 24-year-old Pennsylvania native now calls home. “I wanted to start the album with this song because New York has been an important landscape and location for the story of my life for the last couple of years,” said Swift in a video posted online via YouTube last week.
“The inspiration that I found in that city is kind of hard to describe and hard to compare to any other force of inspiration I’ve ever experienced in my life. It’s like an electric city. I approached moving there with such wide-eyed optimism and sort of saw it as a place of endless potential and possibilities and you can kind of hear that reflected in this music and this first song especially.”
‘Welcome to New York’ is taken from Swift’s new LP ‘1989’ which, according to The New York Times, is expected to become the first album released this year to sell one million copies.
