The Avalanches have previewed their first new song for 16 years as part of a trailer for their comeback album.
The new trailer features Father John Misty, Ariel Pink, Danny Brown, Royal Trux vocalist Jennifer Herrera and singer Kirin J Callinan talk about working on the Australian band’s new album.
The first half of the two-and-a-half-minute trailer features music from the band’s sole album, 2000’s ‘Since I Left You’. However, around the 1:20 mark, the music changes to a new song which appears to feature Danny Brown rapping.
Music recognition app Shazam links the new music in the trailer ‘The Wizord Of Iz’ by Brainz. A list of releases for this Friday (May 20) shows a new single by Brainz entitled ‘Frankie Sinatra’ – which is thought to be the name of one of the two songs Brown collaborated on with The Avalanches.
It has also been speculated on Reddit that The Avalanches have been filming the video for ‘Frankie Sinatra’ this month. The artwork for the single has also supposedly leaked – the rumoured sleeve can be seen here.
The trailer also jokes about the 16-year wait for the new album, with quotes in the film – dubbed ‘Since They Left Us’ – dating back to 2006 from their record label Modular over the long-delayed release.
The band have announced a series of comeback shows, starting at Barcelona’s Primavera Festival in June as well as UK dates at Field Day and Wild Life festivals as well as a London headline date at London’s Oval Space.
It’s believed that the new album, as with ‘Since I Left You’, is wholly comprised of cut-up samples – this time with guests such as Herrera and Callinan singing over the top.
Brown said he preferred the second song he worked on with The Avalanches over ‘Frank Sinatra’ in a 2014 interview. He told Australian radio station Triple J: “’Frank Sinatra’ was cool, but the one we did after that – I swear, if we put that one out, it’ll change the world. I heard it that first night, and that’s the only time I heard it. I really want to hear it again.”
The Avalanches will play:
Primavera Festival (June 3)
London Oval Space (9)
Wild Life Festival (11)
Field Day Festival (12)
Splendour In The Grass Festival (July 22)
Fuji Rock Festival (24)
