Beach Boys’ children form tribute band

Eight band members' children have united to form a tribute group called California Saga

The children of The Beach Boys have joined together to form their own band.

California Saga is a Beach Boys tribute act that bills itself as “the next chapter in the story of America’s Band”. The group gave its first two performances last month (June) as opening act for The Beach Boys themselves.

The ten-strong lineup features Al Jardine‘s sons Adam and Matt, Mike Love‘s children Ambha and Christian, Dennis Wilson‘s boys Justyn and Carl B, and Brian Wilson‘s daughters Carnie and Wendy. The Wilson sisters have previously sung together as two thirds of Wilson Phillips. The California Saga lineup is completed by Carnie’s husband, Rob Bonfiglio, and Billy Hinsche, a longtime Beach Boys associate whose sister was once married to Carl Wilson.

In a recent interview with the Ventura County Star, the band insisted that it formed primarily for musical reasons. Carnie Wilson explained: “It’s gruelling and it’s tedious but it’s worth it because we’re not just getting up there because we’re ‘the children of…’ We’re celebrating these songs that we love.”

At present, the band’s setlist draws exclusively from their fathers’ back catalogue, but Wilson admitted that California Saga could try writing their own material in the future. “We are hoping to go places with the sound and the material – offering people something that has never been offered … [and] maybe even [writing] an original or two,” she said.

California Saga play their next gig at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles tonight (July 10) – once again as support act for their fathers. Earlier this year, The Beach Boys released ‘That’s Why God Made The Radio’, their first album of new material since 1992.
