Richard Hamilton has passed away at the age of 89
Richard Hamilton, the artist hailed as the father of pop art, has died at the age of 89.
Amongst the artist’s most famous works is Swingeing London which depicts The Rolling Stones‘ Mick Jagger handcuffed in the back of a police car. Painted in 1967-68, the piece was made by Hamilton after Jagger was arrested alongside Hamilton‘s art dealer Robert Fraser for possession and use of illegal drugs.
Born in London in 1922, Hamilton – pictured right – left school with no qualifications, but signed up to evening classes at St Martin’s and honed his talent for painting, later enrolling at the Royal Academy before carrying out National Service. His work also includes the iconic 1956 collage Just What Is It that Makes Today’s Homes So Different, So Appealing?
