45 cast members and musicians will play a suite of famous tracks recorded by the band
A live restaging of The Beatles‘ recording sessions at EMI’s Abbey Road studios will be performed in UK arenas in 2016.
Billed as ‘part blockbuster stage show, part access-all-areas musical documentary’, the production, called ‘The Sessions’, sees 45 cast members and musicians recreate a suite of famous tracks recorded by The Beatles at the famous London studios.
Following a charity preview of the show in Liverpool on March 30 and a sold-out world premiere at London’s Royal Albert Hall on April 1, the show will embark on an 11-date UK arena tour, taking in Brighton, Cardiff, Nottingham, Newcastle, Glasgow, Manchester, Aberdeen, Leeds and Birmingham, before coming to a close with two consecutive nights in London.
Set in a ‘state-of-the-art’ reproduction of Abbey Road Studio 2, the show has been inspired by the memoir of Abbey Road sound engineer Geoff Emerick, Here, There and Everywhere. Emerick has also acted as the show’s Creative Consultant.
According to a press release announcing the show, 45 cast members will take to the stage to ensure the show is ‘sonically authentic to the original recordings’, The cast includes seven vocalists, two ‘Johns’, two ‘Pauls’, two ‘Georges’ and one ‘Ringo’, who will work to recreate the vocal harmonies in full. Seven musicians using ‘rare, vintage, historically accurate instruments’ and a 21-piece orchestra will also take part.
Each of the albums recorded by The Beatles at Abbey Road will become a ‘suite’ of songs, making up the show’s ‘Beatles Overture’, which aims to show how they made their music and the innovations that took place in the studio.
The ‘multi-million pound production’ has been developed by Stig Edgren, the creator of Elvis Presley – In Concert Show. He has worked as Executive Producer alongside Kim Gavin, who worked as Creative Director for London’s 2012 Olympic Closing Ceremony and the Take That Stadium tour. The set has been designed and created by Stufish, the architects behind stage shows for The Rolling Stones, AC/DC and U2.
